Chile - La Serena and X-mas in the Andes

Nach einem Umweg ueber Toronto - den wir nehmen mussten, weil die Varig anfangs Jahr groundete - kamen wir nach langem Flug von LA in Santiago de Chile an. Dort erfuhren wir, dass es aufgrund von Pinochets Tod ziemliche Unruhen gab und so beschlossen wir, gleich nach La Serena weiterzufliegen und nicht den Bus aus dem Stadtzentrum zu nehmen. Ein kurzer Flug spaeter kamen wir dann endlich in La Serena an, wo wir in einem herzigen kleinen, von Deutschen gefuehrten Hostal unterkamen und uns gleich in's Bett warfen, um fit fuer den kommenden Schultag zu sein (so wohnten wir in La Serena: Hotel El Punto).

After a diversion to Toronto - which we had to take because of Varig's grounding earlier in the year - we finally arrived in Santiago de Chile from LA. There we heard that there was civil unrest in the city and so we decided rather to fly to La Serena than take the bus from the city centre. A short flight later, we landed in La Serena where we had booked a small hostal managed by Germans - we were so knackered that we went to bed straight away, to be ready for the first Spanish lessons the next day (Our 'hacienda' in La Serena).



The next two weeks, we spent the mornings in Spanish classes - and are now at least able to order one or two beers and not to starve... no well, The school was excellent!! - and the afternoons exploring the city and its surroundings (above: a government building at the Plaza de Armas and the city's lighthouse down at the beach). - The climate was - although around 700km North of Santiago - rather cold due to the Humboldt current that passes all along the coastline of Chile, coming directly from Antarctica...


Die naechsten 2 Wochen verbrachten wir die Vormittage in der Spanisch-Schule am bueffeln - und koennen nun immerhin fehlerlos ein, zwei Biere bestellen und muessen nicht verhungern... Nein, die Schule war super!!! - und die Nachmittage, um die Stadt und ihre naehere Umgebung zu erkunden (oben: Bilder von einem Regierungsgebaeude im Zentrum der Stadt beim Plaza de Armas und der Leuchtturm unten am Strand). - Das Klima war, obwohl La Serena ziemlich noerdlich liegt - eher kuehl wegen dem Humboldt-Strom, der direkt von der Antarktis kommend an der ganzen Kueste Chiles entlang fliesst und so das Klima stark beeinflusst!




Gleich bei La Serena liegt das Elqui-Tal, das bekannt ist fuer seine Agrar-Produkte. Wir machten dann auch eine Tour in's Tal - hier am Stausee, der zur Bewaesserung der Felder dient.


Close to La Serena is the entrance to the Elqui-Valley which is famous for its agricultural products. One week-end, we went on a tour into the valley - here we are at the dam that was built to help irrigate the valley.






Market stands selling products form the region - copao, a cactus fruit, is used like limes and very tasty!!


Marktstaende beim Staudamm verkauften Produkte der Region - copao, eine Kaktusfrucht, wird wie Limonen benutzt und ist recht schmackhaft - daneben ist Aloe Vera.













Die Staumauer kann auch zum Ausruhen benutzt werden...

Vicuña, the main city in the valley, is a beautiful little town with a nice square - like all other chilean cities... They are particularly proud of one of their citizens, Gabriela Mistral, a famous writer and school teacher, of which we see the profile in the middle of the square (and on many other houses, schools, museums...).


Vicuña, die Hauptstadt im Elqui-Tal, ist eine Stadt wie viele in Chile mit einem kleinen Platz im Zentrum... Die Stadt hier ist jedoch noch zusaetzlich stolz auf ihre beruehmte Schriftstellerin und Lehrerin Gabriela Mistral, von welcher wir hier das strenge Profil inmitten des Platzes sehen.









Einer von vielen Gauchos im Tal... Der gleiche kam danach zu Fuss wieder zurueck - und konnte kaum gehen mit seinen O-Beinen...

Torre Bauer in Vicuña - erbaut von einem deutschen Buergermeister. Hier in der Abendsonne, da wir in Vicuña warten mussten, bis es dunkel genug war, um zum Observatorio Mamalluca zu gehen. Dort wollten wir naemlich die Sterne begutachten!!

Here after sunset as we had to wait in the town until it was dark enough to go and admire the nightsky above Vicuña, famous for its clarity and home to many international observatories - we went to the Observatorio Mamalluca, which actually allows visitors to look through the telescope.









Nattie enjoying the view - during the approx. 2h we were there, we saw at least 3 shooting stars that lasted more than 3 or 4 seconds - and many star constellations - amazing!!


Nati geniesst die Aussicht - waehrend der knapp 2h die wir dort verbrachten sahen wir mindestens 3 Sternschnuppen, die laenger als 3 oder 4s am Himmel blieben - und viel Sternkonstellationen und Sternzeichen... - war super!!

In Coquimbo, der Nachbarstadt von La Serena, baute die Kirche in 2000 ein Wahrzeichen auf einen der Huegel - das suendhaft teure, nachts beleuchtete und potthaessliche Betonkreuz mit Kirche, Museum und Lift zur Aussichtsflaeche - noch nicht ganz fertiggestellt, zerfaellt es auch schon wieder teilweise...

Trotzdem wanderten wir dort hinauf und die Aussicht war top!


In Coquimbo, the neighbouring city of La Serena, the catholic church built this cross on top of one of the surrounding hills in 2000 - very expensive, ugly and well-lit during the night, it has a church, a museum and lifts to the viewing platform on top, but, although not yet finished, it already starts to decay again...

Nevertheless, we hiked up there and the view was first-..., well, maybe second-class!

Hier ist er: Der Blick ueber die Bucht von La Serena und Coquimbo, vom Kreuz aus gesehen.












Nach 2 Wochen Schule und La Serena, gingen wir fuer Weihnachten in die Anden, um uns vom Schulstress zu erholen (...) und uns auf der Hacienda Los Andes verwoehnen zu lassen. Mitten im Tal haben Cark Stede und Manuela Paradeiser ein kleines Paradies aufgebaut, das zum grossen Teil noch aus urspruenglicher Vegetation besteht.


After two weeks studying, we desperately needed a break (...) and went for x-mas up to the Andes to get spoilt in the Hacienda Los Andes.

An Weihnachten dann unser 5-stuendiger Ausritt auf dem Sierra-Trail ueber das Land der Hacienda - hier der Stall - die Pferde sind bereits gesattelt und nervoes, endlich zu gehen. Marco war auch nervoes, aber mehr um sich ueberhaupt auf den Pferderuecken zu setzen...

On x-mas, we went on a 5hour horseback riding trip on the Sierra trail - here you see the stables, already empty, as the horses are eager and nervous to go. Marco was nervous too - but more to actually ride rather than wanting to leave...







Was nervoes? - Geht ja von alleine... Ausser, dass Sigi eher zur langsameren Sorte gehoerte und sich immer wieder zurueckfallen liess, wenn man ihm nicht die Sporen gab...

What? - Who is nervous? - No problem - except that Sigi was so slow... he had to be motivated all the time - otherwise he probably would still be on that track... :-)





First break at Camillo's house, a goat shepherd who has been living up there for more than 20 years, all alone with his goats...

Die erste Pause machten wir bei Camillos Huette, einem Hirten, der seit mehr als 20 Jahren dort oben ganz alleine mit seinen Ziegen lebt...









Mittagspause - koestliche Sandwiches und etwas Schutz vor der brennenden Sonne!


Lunch break - delicious homemade sandwiches and some protection from the burning sun!

Auf alle Faelle war es Mega-Fun und sicher nicht das letzte Mal!!


In any case, this riding trip was a lot of fun and certainly not the last time we'll do it!!
