USA - California, Nevada and Arizona

Welcome to the US, welcome to Santa Monica and Venice Beach (our hotel for the first three night in the US)!! - Upon arrival in LA we had to go to the beach straight away, of course. And - who would believe it - 500m down the beach had a real German Weizenbier and Swiss Cheese Salad in a real Swiss Restaurant, owned by some Swiss expats...

Jupii, wir sind in Kalifornien und wohnen erst noch in Santa Monica, nahe der Venice Beach (unser Motel fuer die ersten 3 Naechte in den USA). Kaum angekommen, mussten wir natuerlich sofort an die Beach und - kaum zu glauben - fanden nach 500m ein Schweizer Restaurant (mit Berner Flagge!!) und assen einen richtigen Schweizer Wurst-Kaese-Salat mit einem Erdinger dazu...

Am Abend gingen wir dann die LA Lakers im Staples Center gegen die New Jersey Nets schauen - ausverkauft und super Stimmung beim 99:93 Sieg der Lakers!!


After the beach we went to watch the LA Lakers vs the New Jersey Nets - the Staples Center was sold out and the Lakers won 99:93 in a very tight game!!

Von Santa Monica ging's dann weiter Richtung Las Vegas. Auf dem Weg dorthin machten wir aber zuerst noch einen Abstecher in die Mojave Wueste und fuhren durch's Death Valley. Hier unser Auto mitten in der Mojave Wüste: (PT) Cruisen mit Stil...

Auch kilometerlange Züge gab's hier, die nicht mehr aufhören wollten - an diesem Bahnuebergang warteten wir ca. 10 Minuten bis der Zug vorbei war...

Nach einem Tag im Mojave und Death Valley National Park, erreichten wir dann endlich spaet abends unsere naechste Station:

Las Vegas... - Aussicht vom Mandalay Bay (Mix-Lounge) auf unser Hotel in der Spielerstadt: Ein Midweekspecial und das Zimmer fuer ein Butterbrot!! Der Lichtstrahl von der Spitze des Luxors soll anscheinend so stark sein, dass man ihn noch im All sehen kann...

After a full day in Mojave and Death Valley National Parks, we finally arrived - late at night - at our next stop:

Las Vegas... - The view from the Mix-Lounge at Mandalay Bay on our hotel in the city of sins: A midweekspecial and the room for nothing... The beam from the top of Luxor can apparently be seen in space...




Am zweiten Abend gingen wir dann in die Cirque du Soleil Show "O" im Bellagio - ein unbeschreibliches Erlebnis!!!

The second night in Las Vegas was reserved for the Cirque du Soleil Show "O" in the Bellagio hotel - absolutely fascinating!!!








New York, New York - in Las Vegas!!















Und hier das Hotel Venezia - inklusive Gondelfahrt im Hotel drin.

Von Las Vegas machten wir uns dann nach 3 Tagen weiter auf Richtung Grand Canyon, unserem naechsten Stop auf der "Klein-US-Tour". Beim Hoover Dam, der Grenze zwischen Nevada und Arizone, machten wir einen kurzen Halt.


After 3 days and nights in Las Vegas, we went on towards Grand Canyon. On our way, we made a short stop at the Hoover Dam and had some greasy lunch...



Unbeschreiblicher Grand Canyon!!! Saukalt, aber extrem eindrücklich!!

Wir kamen nach rund 5h Fahrt dort an und bezogen eine kleine Lodge nahe beim Rand des Canyons, wo wir fuer die naechsten 2 Tage blieben.

Incredible Grand Canyon!!! Bloody cold, but extremely impressive!!

We finally arrived there after 5h driving through beautiful, deserted landscapes and moved into a small lodge, close to the rim of the Canyon where we stayed the next 2 nights.



Nach 2 Naechten im winterlich-kalten, aber sonnigen Arizona, fuhren wir weiter zum Joshua Tree National Park, wo wir in Twentynine Palms nahe einer US-Marines Militaerbasis und gleich beim Eingang zum Park eine kurze Nacht in einer Oase verbrachten - U2 laesst gruessen...

After 2 nights in freezing, but sunny Arizona, we drove to Twentynine Palms where the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park is and spent a short night in an Oasis, remembering U2...

Unser naechster Halt: San Diego - und dessen Skyline von der Bruecke zur Coronado Halbinsel, wo auch das weltberuehmte Hotel del Coronado liegt, wo Filme wie "Manche moegen's heiss" mit Marilyn Monroe gedreht wurden.

Our next stop: San Diego - and its skyline taken from the bridge to the Coronado peninsula, where the world-famous Hotel del Coronado is - films like "Some like it hot" with Marilyn Monroe were shot in this hotel...




The California Tower and the Museum of Man in San Diego's Balboa Park - and the blue sky which was with us nearly all of our 2 weeks in California...

Little Italy in San Diego - wo wir ziemlich mittelmaessig italienisch assen... Das einzig annaehernd italienische waren die riesigen Portionen, wobei das ja auch schon wieder typisch amerikanisch ist, nicht...

Nach 2 Naechten in San Diego und einem Plattfuss fuhren wir zurueck nach LA, dieses Mal nach West Hollywood, wo wir noch einmal 3 Tage (und Naechte im Beverly Laurel Motor Hotel, mit dem Swingers nebendran fuer koestliche Fruehstuecks!!) hatten, bevor wir nach Chile weiterflogen. Fuer die rund 200km zwischen San Diego und LA hatten wir mehr als 5h - der Verkehr ist trotz 6 Spuren in eine Richtung einfach unglaublich!!!

Zurück in LA mussten wir natürlich noch den "Walk of Fame" auf dem Hollywood-Boulevard machen - und Nati fand doch tatsächlich ihren eigenen Stern!!! Wer hätte das gedacht...

After two nights in San Diego and a flat tyre, we set sails again to go back to LA - this time to West Hollywood and the Beverly Laurel Motor Hotel where we stayed another 3 days (and nights - the famous Swingers Diner's is just next to the hotel and serves delicious breakfasts!!) before taking off to Chile. For the approx. 200km, it took us more than 5h - and this although we had 6 lanes in one direction - the traffic willbe LA's death one day...

Back in LA, we had to visit Hollywood Boulevard's Walk of Fame, of course - and, what a surprise, Nattie found her own star...



Ausserdem versuchten wir noch verzweifelt zum Hollywood-Zeichen zu fahren - hoffnungslos... Dafür hier das obligate Photo...


We also desperately tried to drive to the Hollywood-Sign - no chance... But here's the mandatory picture...
